#Artistresidency Irene Pittatore at Es Baluard
During her period as a resident artist in Es Baluard Museu d’Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma, Irene Pittatore (Turin, 1979) had the opportunity to develop, in Palma (Mallorca), the second chapter of her project: Lavoratori del Turismo (Employees in the tourism sector), a research and video project started in 2017 that it aims to define a device able to observe and record the consequences global tourism has on work, on the conversion of the local economies and on the cultural schedules of the art and holiday cities. The first chapter of the project, produced by Arts Santa Mònica, in Barcelona, and curated by Pedro Medina, is dedicated to the city of Venice. It is part of Ciutat de vacances, a permanent on-line observatory, research pole and exhibition platform devoted to the transformations the meta cities of great touristic flows.
In order to build a critical frame and to be introduced to local professionals, Irene Pittatore had preliminary conversations with Nekane Aramburu, Es Baluard Museum’s director, and the curator Tolo Cañellas, mentor of Pittatore’s project within The Spur, as well as with the social anthropologist Marc Morell. In different places of Mallorca, such as Palma, Alaró, Illetes, Manacor, Santa Maria del Camí or Sóller…, Irene Pittatore met employees of the private and public transport sector, hospitality and catering professionals, tour guides, musicians and organizers of services and events for tourists, artisans…
The open studio in Es Baluard Museum (14/28 November 2017) was an opportunity for the artist to show the progress of the Mallorcan chapter of Lavoratori del Turismo to the museum’s audience and an attempt to started a dialogue with citizens, travellers and some students, such as the ESADIB’s Research Group. The “intermedi room” of the museum became a venue for interviews, a meeting area and a shared notebook. Irene Pittatore also counted with the help of some newspapers, as the Mallorca Zeitung and the Última Hora, that interviewed the artist and cooperated in spreading the call for citizens’ experiences in the tourism industry.
The research phase of the project will unfold in a short non-narrative video that tracks the experience acquired, the formal and informal conversations held locally, the information as well as the gathered silences. Lavoratori del Turismo will also include excerpts from the collected video interviews with professionals with an established work experience in the tourism industry, in order to draw attention to the direct experience of the professionals involved and to give an idea of their typical working day.
